A man and a woman allegedly set themselves on fire
A man and a woman allegedly set themselves on fire outside the Supreme Court in New Delhi on Monday morning. The incident took place outside the court complex at Bhagwan Das Road. Both have been admitted to the RML hospital in critical condition.
A video has surfaced on the Internet the moment before they put themselves on fire claiming that the Uttar Pradesh Government and administration is helping the accused MP Atul Rai to walk away free, and are intimidating them into not seeking justice.
The victim lady had lodged a case of sexual harassment against Member of Parliament Atul Rai in 2019. The Supreme Court stayed the ongoing trial against MP Atul Rai in the case and sought his response on the plea of the alleged victim seeking transfer of the case from Prayagraj to Delhi on grounds including the threat to her life.
The counsel for the woman submitted to the court that on December 18, 2020, when the victim went for the court hearing with her witness, both were beaten inside the court premises at Prayagraj and for which another FIR had been lodged at Colonelganj Police station at Allahabad.
Fearing threat to her life and also that she will not get a fair trial in a special court at Prayagraj, the plea seeking transfer of trial to Delhi has been filed. The bench ordered a stay on the case pending before the special judge court, Prayagraj.
Recently, a local court in Varanasi had issued a non-bailable warrant against the woman in a forgery case. The case had been registered by the police on a complaint lodged by the MP Atul Rai’s brother alleging the woman has forged the documents to hide her date of birth.
