NEWS: Lucknow Court Sends Ex-IPS Amitabh Thakur to Judicial Custody in Relation to Self Immolation incident outside SC.

The Lucknow Court has sent ex-IPS Amitabh Thakur to Judicial Custody till 9th September. He was arrested on the charges of abetting the suicide of a woman and her friend who recently set themself on fire outside the Supreme Court.

The 24 year old woman, who was allegedly raped by Bahujan Samaj Party MP Atul Rai in 2019, succumbed to burn injuries yesterday. Her male friend, a 27 year old Delhi University graduate, had died during treatment last week.

Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh Government had formed a two-member probe panel to look into the allegations made by the woman. This panel was led by DGP (Police Recruitment and Promotion Board) and Additional D-G (Women Power Line).

After the inquiry, a report was submitted to the State Government and based on that an FIR was lodged against Amitabh Thakur and Atul Rai under sections 167 (public servant framing an incorrect document with intent to cause injury), 195-A (threatening any person to false evidence), 218 (public servant framing incorrect record, etc), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC. Subsequently, police arrested Amitabh Thakur on charges of abetting a woman’s suicide. However, Atul Rai is already in Naini Jail in Prayagraj.
