NEWS: Letter to CJI Requesting to take Suo Moto Cognizance of Self Immolation incident outside SC

A Supreme Court Advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava has written to Chief Justice of India NV Ramana requesting to take suo moto cognizance of the self-immolation incident that took place outside the Supreme Court on 16 August 2021, wherein a woman and man set themselves on fire outside the Supreme Court.

The 24 year old woman, who was allegedly raped by Bahujan Samaj Party MP Atul Rai in 2019, succumbed to burn injuries yesterday. Her male friend, a 27 year old Delhi University graduate, had died during treatment last week.

The man had sustained 65% burn injuries while the woman had sustained 85% burn injuries. Both were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohiya Hospital after the incident.

A video has surfaced on the internet wherein the man and woman went live on Facebook disclosing their identity and claiming that UP Government and administration is helping the accused MP and intimidating them into not seeking justice.

The Letter by Advocate Alok Srivastava states

“It is quite axiomatic from a bare perusal of the aforesaid news report that the deceased Rape Victim and her family members had levelled serious allegations on the accused MP, policemen and also on a member of the judiciary.”
