NEWS: Allahabad HC orders inquiry by Etah Chief-Judicial Magistrate into assault on lawyer

Allahabad High Court Takes Suo Moto Cognizance of the assault on lawyers by Uttar Pradesh Police.

The Bench comprising of Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Sumitra Dayal Singh has directed the Chief-Judicial Magistrate, Etah to enquire into the matter and submit a complete report on or before the next date of hearing.

The High Court also directed that the accused should be in custody till next date of hearing which is January 8, 2021.

The Uttar Pradesh Police had broken the door of advocate Rajendra Sharma’s house in Etah and dragged him out in his advocate’s dress and assaulted him. The video of the incident had gone viral on social media leading widespread condemnation.

Earlier Bar Council of India had written to the Chief Justice of India, Justice SA Bobde and the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court, Justice Govind Mathur, requesting them to take immediate steps against the police personnel who assaulted the lawyer.

Moreover the District Magistrate, Etah as well as Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah have also been directed to cooperate and supply all relevant facts and documents.

The Supreme Court Bar Association had also released a statement on Monday condemning the police action against the lawyer.
