NEWS: Madras HC stays Single bench Judgment in Actor Vijay Entry Tax case

A division bench comprising Justice M. Duraiswamy and Justice R. Hemalatha stayed a single bench judgment that imposed a cost of Rs 1 Lakh on him for filing a petition challenging the levy of entry tax on his luxury car.

Actor Vijay appealed to the division bench about the unjust and derogatory remarks made by the single bench on him and against the whole acting community in general while dismissing his petition.

The Division Bench directed Vijay to pay the balance 80% Entry Tax within a week of the demand challan issued by the tax department.

The Single Bench had made observation by saying that while his reel life characters were preaching tax compliance, in real life he was seeking exemption.

The Bench said: “These Actors are portraying themselves as champions, to bring social justice in the society. Their pictures are against corrupt activities in society. But, they are evading Tax and acting in a manner, which is not in consonance with the provisions of the Statutes.

Vijay appealed before the bench that such remarks were totally unjustified and uncalled.
