India on Sunday took over from France to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of August. This is the first presidency for India during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T S Tirumurti said in his tweet. “India has just assumed the presidency of The UN Security Council on 1st August. India and France enjoy historical and close relations. I thank France for all the support which they’ve given us during our stint in the Security Council,”

He stipulated that during this term, India will organize three high-level signatures meetings focusing on maritime security, peacekeeping, and counter-terrorism.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a tweet, “As we take over UNSC Presidency for August, look forward to working productively with other members. India will always be a voice of moderation, an advocate of dialogue, and a proponent of international law.”

The first working day of India’s Presidency will be Monday, August 2 when Tirumurti will hold a hybrid press briefing in the UN headquarters on the Council’s programme of work for the month.

This is India’s tenth tenure. So far it has been President of the body nine times: June 1950, September 1967, December 1972, October 1977, February 1985, October 1991, December 1992, August 2011, and November 2012.

France and Russia congratulated India on assuming the presidency of the UNSC.
